V1 and V2 Attacks on Elephant & Castle and Walworth (London SE17)

 

Records indicate that the SE17 postcode area endured severe damage from flying bombs, though it was spared from ballistic missile strikes. SE17 was hit by six V1 flying bombs, but no V2 rockets fell directly within this boundary. In total, these six strikes killed approximately 43 people.

 

 

 

 

The worst V1 incident in SE17 was 17 July 1944 (05:13): This strike was the worst tragedy in SE17 in terms of human life. A V1 hit Suffield Road—a street situated northwest of Manor Place that no longer exists today—killing 17 people. The sheer force of the explosion demolished 40 houses and damaged a further 150
