This was The First V1 to fall in Dulwich SE21. Six houses were demolished and 20 damaged by the blast. There was a further V1 in Lovelace Road on the 1st August which fell further up on the North side past Christchurch. Visiting the road today it is difficult to find signs of the damage because the demolished houses have been re-built in exactly the same style as they were previously. However, careful inspection reveals 1940's style brickwork on the flank walls of the houses which have been re-built in the same style as their 1920' neighbours

This V1 fell on the club house of Dulwich Golf Course and totally destroyed it. There is also a record that War Department buildings were damaged but no further detail was provided. As there was an anti aircraft gun on what is still known as the gun site allotments it would seem likely that they were buildings associated with this installation. The club house has been totally re-built in post war style

Woodvale 6/7/44 is a bit of a mystery. What is clear is that 14 people, mainly at 1-3 Woodvale, died. What is unclear is whether there were one or 2 V1's. The Fire Brigade clearly show 2 incidents one minute apart but the ARP records only record one bomb. The report for the 06:41 bomb speaks of 6 demolished houses and 50 badly damaged. The 06:42 V1 has 4 demolished and 7 badly damaged. Further confusion arises because the Dulwich Air raid records record 2 of the deaths at number 15. Now this is some way up the road and unlikely to be caused by the V1 which devastated 1-3. So this would point to a second V1, however, I cant see an obvious signs of damage to the large Victorian house.! After 60 years the truth will probably never now be known-unless any reader can throw light on the matter

This one devasted shops and houses around the Park Hall Road/South Croxted Road junction and also caused severe damage to 20 others in South Croxted Road and 14 in Ildersley Grove. No casualties were reported. The results of this can clearly be seen today where shops have been re-built at the junction on both side of South Croxted Road. This was the third V1 of five in the area |

The V1 fell in the area behind Dulwich Library at the junction of Lordship lane and Woodwarde Road. It injured 14 people and demolished a church and the priests house in Lordship Lane. The library was partly demolished . 9 shops and 40 houses suffered severe damage in Lordship lane and 50 houses badly damaged in Court Lane. The library has been re-built and the damaged/rebuilt area can clearly be seen. Also of interest is the fact that metal frame replacement windows can still be seen in buildings on the opposite side of Woodward Road

The V1 very seriously damaged Sloanes Dulwich Picture Gallery. It has been renovated only in the 1930's. Many paintings were lost although the most important ones had been removed to safe storage. Severe damage was also caused to the Old college and to 4 houses. There was no casualties. After the war the gallery was re-built to the original plans but you can still clearly see variances in the brickwork where the building has been extensively rebuilt

This was a very serious V1 incident, one of the worst in South London. The V1 hit the co-op store at the corner of Northross Road in Lordship Lane. The Co-op and 6 other shops were demolished and 20 houses damaged in Lordship land and 40 in Shawbury Road.A Salvation army hall was also damaged. It is stated in ARP reports held in the public records office that damage extended across a 700 yard radius, greater than the normal blast area. This is probably due to the fact that later V1's were packed with a heavier, more deadly warhead. It was also reported that Anderson shelters in the area stood up well to the blast. Bulldozers were called in to clear the debris and one tram track was cleared by 20.30 of the same day. The whole block where the Coop stood has been re-developed with post war shops. The opposite side of Lordship Lane also shows significant signs of re-building as do houses up Shawbury Road
